Pallivasal

The Pallivasal Hydro Electric Scheme is the first hydroelectric project in the Idukki district of Kerala state. The power project is commissioned in 1940 with an installed capacity of 37.5 MW (3 units of 5 MW and 3 units of 7.5 MW). The water source for generation of electricity is Muthirapuzha/Periyar River with a static head of 608m with design discharge of 1.5cumec/unit

Residual life assessment of penstocks was done & was concluded that certain length of penstock up to Powerhouse had to be replaced with new ones for better performance & better power generation. The Kerala State Electricity Board, as the project owner, along with the contractor SSIPL, approached BHEC to provide design services.

BHEC has delivered hydraulic design of penstock and its related designs like expansion joints, bends, rocker supports and manhole for the scheme. The major feature in this work is the extremely high head of 608m.
